# Maturity Check: Which AI-Visibility Stage Is Your Business At?

> Four stages show you in a few minutes how AI-visible your business really is today — and what the next sensible step looks like.

Which AI-visibility stage your business is at right now can be roughly worked out with four simple questions: does an AI find your business at all? Can it read your facts cleanly? Does it have a machine-readable profile of you? And does it already recommend you on its own? This isn't a scientific test — it's an honest orientation grid you can use to place yourself in a few minutes, and see where the next sensible step lies.

## Why this question matters especially for South Tyrol and the DACH region

This question matters especially for South Tyrol and the DACH region because there, for a trades business in the Puster Valley or a studio in Vorarlberg, it's no longer the nicest design that decides whether an AI finds them, but whether their own facts are machine-readable. More and more people no longer just ask Google when making a decision — they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or an AI overview directly, and get a ready-made answer naming just a handful of businesses. Whoever is missing here simply isn't mentioned by the AI — regardless of how good their Google ranking otherwise looks.

## The four stages at a glance

The following four stages build on each other. Most businesses that have never looked into this sit somewhere between stage 0 and stage 1.

### Stage 0 — practically invisible to AI systems

At stage 0, an AI can't find your business in a targeted way, because barely any reliable, coherent facts about it exist online — maybe a single directory listing, a mention on an industry portal, little else. There's no dedicated digital foundation an AI could draw on. If someone asks an AI specifically about this business, the answer is either nothing at all or a vague, outdated guess.

### Stage 1 — a digital foundation exists, but without structured data

At stage 1, a business has a digital foundation with text written for people, but no structured data an AI can use directly. The services are described somewhere in flowing prose, but not in the format an AI can reliably parse — no Schema.org markup, no llms.txt file. The AI has to guess and interpret rather than cite cleanly. The result: it sometimes picks the business up, but mixes up facts slightly or leaves it out altogether.

### Stage 2 — a machine-readable foundation is in place

At stage 2, the business has a machine-readable profile: structured data in JSON-LD format for facts like opening hours, services and location, usually paired with an llms.txt file as a short, clear AI-facing summary. AI systems can now cite correctly, provided they're actually asked — but the business doesn't yet reliably surface as an unprompted recommendation. For South Tyrol, there's an additional lever here: businesses that provide their facts in German, Italian and English from the outset, rather than relying purely on automated translation, are cited more reliably by AI systems across all three language communities.

### Stage 3 — actively recommended in AI answers

At stage 3, an AI names the business on its own when someone asks a relevant question — say, "Who does this near me?" or a concrete question about the service itself. This stage isn't something you reach once and keep forever: it only holds if the underlying facts stay current and are maintained regularly, rather than being set up once and forgotten.

## Working out your own stage in five minutes

The fastest way to place yourself is three short checks you can run yourself, no technical knowledge required:

- Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity about your business directly — does the AI know you at all, and are the details it gives correct?
- Open yourdomain.xy/llms.txt in your browser — do you get a short text summary, or an error message?
- Use "View Page Source" on your homepage and search for application/ld+json — that's the marker for structured data being present.

Three hits means you're at least at stage 2. No hits means you're still at the start — and that's no reason for concern, just the most honest starting point for the next step.

## The jump rarely means starting from scratch

Moving from one stage to the next usually doesn't mean throwing everything out. Often it's enough to extend the existing digital foundation with structured data and a short, machine-readable profile — the rest follows at whatever pace suits the business.
