# LLMs.txt

> What the llms.txt file is, how it shows AI models your important content in a structured way, and why it makes your digital foundation machine-readable.

Synonyms: llms.txt file

llms.txt is a simple text file you place in the root directory of your site – similar to the well-known robots.txt, but for AI language models instead of search-engine crawlers. It summarises which content on your site matters, how it connects and where the reliable facts are.

The point behind it: AI assistants don't have to fight their way through layout, menus and scripts, but get a clear, machine-readable map of your content. That lowers the chance of a model spreading outdated or wrong information about you.

llms.txt is no magic bullet, but one building block of a machine-readable foundation. It works best when the linked content is itself cleanly structured and up to date. What comes after the file is covered in llms.txt is only step one.
