## What is LLMO?

LLMO — Large Language Model Optimization — is the practice of shaping your content so that one specific language model, such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, can find it, interpret it correctly and reproduce it in its answers. Where classic SEO targets a search engine's ranking list, LLMO targets the answer a model actually gives.

## What does LLMO mean, exactly?

The term breaks down literally: a *large language model* is the AI system behind assistants like ChatGPT; *optimization* means adjusting your content to how that system reads. The LLMO meaning is often confused with general AI visibility — but strictly, LLMO is the narrowest of the new disciplines: one model, its specific behaviour, its specific sources.

## How LLMO relates to GEO and AEO

LLMO sets itself apart from GEO rather than replacing it: GEO is the bigger picture of generative search — how content becomes citable across AI search engines and answer systems as a whole. LLMO operates one level deeper, asking how one individual model processes, weighs and reproduces content. Put simply, it's reverse-engineering that particular model. Whether you need all these abbreviations at all is a fair question — [we've answered it separately](https://btlabs.dev/en/posts/geo-aeo-llmo-do-you-need-five-acronyms).

## What does LLMO work look like in practice?

Concretely, it means observing how a specific model answers questions your customers ask; checking which sources it cites and whether your site is among them; making facts about your business unambiguous and machine-readable; and re-testing after the model is updated — because model updates can silently change who gets cited.

## Does a small business need LLMO?

Usually not as a starting point. Clean, citable content works across several systems at once — that's GEO, and it covers most of the ground. LLMO only becomes relevant once one particular model matters disproportionately for your audience, making model-specific adjustments worthwhile. Start broad, measure, and go model-specific only when the numbers tell you to.
