# hreflang

> hreflang tells search engines and AI systems which language version of a page is meant for whom — the basis for clean multilingual sites without duplicate content.

Synonyms: hreflang tag, hreflang attribute, language and region tag

hreflang sits in the metadata of every page and links all language versions of a piece of content together: the German page points to the Italian and English versions — and vice versa. Search engines then understand this is not duplicate content, but the same page for different audiences.

For South Tyrolean businesses with German, Italian, and often English content, this is not a nice-to-have but a foundation: without correct hreflang, Italian-speaking searchers can end up on the German version — or the two language versions compete against each other in search instead of complementing each other.

If hreflang is missing or wrong, you lose more than visibility in classic search. AI systems also use these signals to pick the right language version for a query — a clean hreflang setup is therefore also a building block for AI-ready multilingualism.
