# Headless CMS

> Learn how a headless CMS separates content from presentation, maintains it centrally and delivers it to website, app, shop or AI agent at once.

Synonyms: decoupled CMS, API-first CMS, headless content management

The term “headless” means the system has no fixed “head” — no predefined presentation layer. A classic content system binds content management and display tightly together; a headless CMS decouples the two. Content lives in a structured, central system and is retrieved through an interface (API).

The benefit: the same content can be published across several channels without duplicate maintenance — on your website, in an app, in a shop, or as a machine-readable source for AI systems. You maintain a piece of information exactly once, and every connected channel automatically pulls the same version. That keeps your content fast, cleanly structured and easy to find.

For you it means more freedom and less dependency: the design can be shaped freely without being constrained by the system, and new channels can be added without rebuilding the content. Your platform stays expandable for years instead of being chained to a fixed template.
