# Earned Media

> What earned media are, why web mentions carry roughly three times the weight of backlinks, and how they decide your AI recommendation.

Synonyms: earned coverage, brand mention, unlinked mention, editorial mention

Earned media covers everything third parties write or say about your business — from the local paper to specialist blogs to industry directories. Unlike paid advertising (paid media) or your own channels (owned media), earned media can't be controlled directly, only earned through good work and continuous visibility. For AI answers to evaluation questions (“Who's the best?”) this is exactly what's decisive: AI systems trust what others say about you more than your self-presentation.

A concrete example for South Tyrol: a local newspaper article mentions an inn in the Puster Valley, or a guest leaves a detailed review on a booking platform covering rooms and service. Neither appears on the business's own website — yet both add to its digital reputation. AI systems read these independent sources too and weigh them when forming a recommendation.

The consequence when earned media is missing: a business relying solely on its own website remains, for AI systems, a single unconfirmed source. Without independent third-party mentions, the trust signal that AI answers need for comparison questions is missing — citation becomes rarer or is skipped altogether, even when the business's own content is accurate.
