# Cookieless

> What cookieless means, why the industry talks about it, what you can still measure — and when a cookie banner really becomes unnecessary.

Synonyms: cookieless web, without third-party cookies, first-party only, cookieless tracking

## What does cookieless mean?

Cookieless describes a website that works without third-party tracking cookies — and usually also the measurement that takes their place. The distinction matters: first-party cookies from your own domain (for a login, say) are unproblematic. What goes away are the cookies of external services that follow visitors across many websites.

## Why is everyone talking about "cookieless"?

Because the technology behind it is being phased out. Several browsers now block third-party cookies by default, and the advertising industry has spent years preparing for a web without them — under exactly this keyword. For a business, that means: what looks like a privacy decision today will simply be the normal state tomorrow. If you measure cookieless now, there is nothing to rebuild later.

## Does cookieless mean I can no longer measure anything?

No — you keep measuring, just differently: first-party, directly on your own domain, without handing data to external networks. Visitor numbers, page views, origin and enquiries all remain visible. What disappears is cross-site tracking of individual people — which the question "what does my website actually achieve?" never needed anyway.

## Do I still need a cookie banner then?

Usually not — that is the most tangible benefit. If you set no cookies that require consent, there is no consent to collect: visitors land on your content instead of a click barrier. But be careful: the analytics tool alone does not settle this. An embedded video or an external chat widget sets its own cookies — what counts is your entire toolset, not just the most obvious part.

## What does this mean for a small business?

Cookieless is privacy-friendly by design: compliant without consent gymnastics, full data ownership, and an impression of seriousness from the first visit — no banner squandering trust at the door. In btlabs Core, cookieless measurement is built in from the start, [like every part of the foundation](https://btlabs.dev/en/features).
